A wonderful 4-minute video from the past...where has all this stoicism and common-sense gone?
My co-author on a number of articles
sent me this 4-minute video clip found on Facebook.Dating from 1959, it features the popular Britsh interviewer Alan Whicker asking people in the street what were their chosen “cures for flu”.
It is a wonderful compilation.
It is notable how stoical these people were - some of that wouldn’t go amiss in our current times. But it’s also worth noting that, regardless of how misguided (if at all) you see their homespun remedies, the essence of the advice - “stay in bed till you’re better” - remains the optimal response to upper respiratory infections for nearly everyone.
It’s quite sad to contrast the attitudes held back then to how absolutely insane people have now become.
They only appear stoical because the BBC had censored it by editing out the majority of sensible interviewees who said they had clearly been subject to a bioweapons attack and were demanding that the authorities immediately vaccinate them with whatever wondercure was to hand!
It's the only explanation for their reckless behaviour.
Now we know an old sweaty sock would have outperformed Paxlovid in a head to head trial, we should start stockpiling for next winter.
